Which tests does a FBC (full blood count) contain?

The FBC (full blood count) includes the measurement of hematocrit, hemoglobin, erythrocyte markers, red and white blood cells, white blood cell types, the type of platelets and some platelet parameters.

Which tests do I have to do proactively?

Indicative examinations that we do preventively can be found on this page. Of course, these exams are tailored according to each case.

What preparation is needed for urinalysis test or urine culture?

It is preferable to have the urinalysis done with the first morning urine. After washing the area with a normal soap, we collect the urine in the urine collecting container, without the urine touching the vagina as far as the women are concerned. 10 ml is enough. Urine must be submitted in less than half an hour. Refrigeration (4 ° C) is required if transport is delayed.

How do we collect 24-hour urine?

We buy a 24-hour urine collection container from a pharmacy. On the day that we begin collecting the urine, we do not collect the first morning urination, but we collect all the urine of the day, of the night and the first morning urine of the next day. We keep the urine in the refrigerator all the time. Depending on the test you may need to add some kind of a preservative, ask us about it.

Do blood tests take place only in the morning?

Blood testing for the usual biochemical tests (blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, iron etc.) should be done in the morning so that the individual has not eaten anything for at least 12 hours. Also, some tests are affected by the time of day such as the iron. The rest of the tests can be done as long as the lab is open.

Are there blood tests that can be done in the afternoon?

Several tests can be performed at any time of the day, e.g., blood test, blood type, rhesus, hormone tests such as human chorionic, gonadotrophin or thyroid hormones, cultures etc.

Is it necessary to contact the lab and make an appointment before I come in for a medical examination?

It is not necessary to make an appointment for most tests. For some, such as the spermographic, it is advisable to have prior consultation.

What should I pay attention to in order to do a semen analysis?

  • Abstinence from sexual intercourse or masturbation for 3-4 days.
  • Avoid consuming too much alcohol.
  • Gentle cleansing of the genital organs with soap and water. Wiping with sterile gauze.
  • The semen is collected in a sterile cup (urine collecting container) after masturbation and not intermittent intercourse.
  • We are careful to collect all the quantity.
  • During the winter months, we make sure we do not expose the sperm to low temperatures when it is transported to the laboratory, by putting it in our pocket.
  • The transfer to the lab should take place in half an hour.

Does the vaginal discharge test need some preparation?

It is advisable to wash ourselves at our house the previous night with the usual soap (not antiseptic) that we use for our personal hygiene. It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse on the day of the examination.

How many hours do I need to fast for a check-up?

It is necessary to keep fasting for 10-12 hours from food (and juice, coffee, gums, candies) before the blood test. It is advisable to abstain from alcohol for 2-3 days.

Can we drink water before the blood test?

Yes, water does not affect any test.

Can we take our medicine before the blood test?

Some drugs interfere with the metabolism of certain substances or with the reaction of the analysis. Such drugs are:

  • Anxiolytics - hypnotics (Librium, Valium, Hipnosedon)
  • Salicylates (Aspirin, Salospir)
  • Contraceptives (they cause increase in iron, total cholesterol and decrease in HDL-cholesterol)
  • Antihypertensive - Diuretics (Hygroton, Lasix)
  • The antiepileptic drug Epanutin
  • Cortisone (affecting sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc.)

Does having period affect examinations?

During the days of the period some tests may be affected. For example, we can observe an increase in white blood cells, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, cholesterol, magnesium, CA-125, and aldosterone. The above potential changes are usually small and irrelevant. In large blood loss there is a decrease in iron, ferritin and platelets and hematocrit because of the blood loss. Also, during the menstrual period, the general urine test is affected too.

Does smoking affect test results?

By smoking a cigarette, the marrow and the adrenal cortex are stimulated. Glucose is increased in 10 minutes and the increase lasts for 1 hour. The growth hormone is doubled in 30 minutes. It is preferable not to smoke before the blood test.
